Choose the Account Model First

A self-directed brokerage account gives you control over each investment decision. A robo-advisor makes and maintains portfolio decisions within the program's rules. A digital asset exchange or wallet solves a different custody problem. An online business marketplace helps transfer an operating asset.

Compare the legal relationship, what the provider controls, how assets are held, and what protection applies if the company has a problem.

Calculate the Whole Cost

Zero commission does not mean zero cost. An account can still include advisory fees, fund expenses, subscription charges, transfer fees, spreads, required cash, or revenue arrangements involving affiliated products.

Flat monthly pricing deserves special attention in a small account. Five dollars a month is $60 a year. On a $1,000 balance, that is a 6% annual cost before the underlying investments move.

Questions Worth Answering Before You Fund

  • Is this a brokerage account, advisory account, custody account, or marketplace relationship?
  • What is the minimum to open, invest, receive advice, or unlock tax features?
  • How does the provider make money if the visible fee is zero?
  • Can you transfer the assets in kind, or must they be sold?
  • What human support exists during an account, tax, or market problem?
