Identify the Legal Claim
The first question is not whether the product tracks gold. It is whether the investor owns fund shares, a contractual claim on vaulted metal, a redeemable token, or an unrelated asset being compared with gold.
Each structure changes the custody, liquidity, fees, redemption rules, tax treatment, and failure risk.
Three Common Structures
- Exchange-traded products that hold or seek exposure to gold and trade through a brokerage account.
- Vaulted-metal services that record allocated or pooled ownership through an online account.
- Tokens that claim to represent metal, which add issuer, technology, wallet, trading venue, and redemption risk.
The Due Diligence List
- Read the prospectus, ownership terms, custody arrangement, and redemption rules.
- Calculate management, storage, spread, transaction, and withdrawal costs.
- Check whether holdings are independently audited and whether the investor has a direct claim.
- Separate the price risk of gold from the operational risk of the product used to hold it.
